KLA Chess Club represents at the Jimmy Quon Scholastic Chess Tournament

February 24, 2014.  KLA Chess Club had six students participate in the annual Jimmy Quon Scholastic Chess Tournament held at the San Diego Chess Club at Balboa Park.

Students included were:
Primary Students Emily H. Samantha W
Secondary Students Angelica W. Fua D. Alex J. Pedro R.
Special recognition for Pedro R. for his exceptional play and capturing 2nd place in the intermediate division. In his first tournament outside of KLA Chess Club, Pedro scored 4 out of 5 points. 
The tournament featured nearly 100 students from around San Diego ranging from primary to high school students. KLA chess club is very proud to support our players by helping defer costs through club fundraising.
The club looks ahead to April 4-6 as the K-12 High School Nationals comes to San Diego. This tournament will feature scholastic players from all over the country and is sure to be a tournament to remember.

Within a week, we have received two funded projects through Donors Choose! Our latest project funded is for four of our students to be fully funded to attend the USCF K-12 National Championships in April. The cost for each player to attend is $50, which is quite costly for our program. I was pretty amazed to see how quickly the project was funded. 

As you can tell from the picture above, it is T-Shirt Time! KLA Chess Club t’s are in and they look good. Is it the model or the t-shirt?

Earlier this year, I put up a prayer and requested funds to receive 10 new digital chess clocks needed for tournament play. These clocks are quite expensive for a club such as us. I wasn’t really to confident about having our project funded through Donor’s Choose, but I gave it a shot anyway…we had nothing to lose by asking.

I was pleasantly surprised on the day after Christmas to see an email that our project had been funded. We were nearly $500 dollars away from our goal. A generous donor from Nebraska put up the large sum of money to fund our project. It is humbling, yet encouraging to see our program grow and to have others see the benefits of chess has on students.

Previously, we had been using an online chess clocks using laptops, which did work for our class tournaments, but couldn’t use them for tournament play. 

The clocks should be at KLA shortly.
